Launching of the Floating Islands in Kiełczów – April 12, 2025
The filtration islands have been built and launched – the key phase of the second edition of the project “Plant-Based Filtration Islands 2025” is now complete. We now await the growth of the plants, their harvest, and the analysis of the effectiveness of this natural water purification method. Until mid-July, we invite you to observe the changes taking place on the islands, the development of vegetation, and the water ecosystem in the lake in Kiełczów, located in the Green Settlement, where the islands have been placed.
What happened earlier?
Spring in the project marked an intense period of activity for its participants – primary school students from Brzezia Łąka, Wilczyce, Kiełczów, Borowa, and Długołęka, as well as youth from the High School in Długołęka. Experimental workshops and independent research in schools served as an introduction to the topic of water purity in lakes, rivers, ponds, and our aquatic environment. The condition of water bodies, pollution caused by agriculture and excessive use of synthetic fertilizers, their impact on aquatic life and human health were the focus of presentations and experiments. These showed how important sustainable development is for the life and health of ecosystems.
After the laboratory phase, the technical workshops and construction of filtration island platforms took place at the 3M company headquarters in Wrocław. The efficiency and commitment of children, youth, teachers, and parents impressed the Institute team and significantly eased the workload. These were truly enjoyable and rewarding days of collaboration. The generous hospitality of 3M, the support of its employees, and the enthusiasm and involvement of all participants proved that beyond the important goal of finding natural methods for water purification and promoting pro-environmental habits, collective action makes a real difference.
The project meeting on Saturday, April 12, in Kiełczów – gathering participants, their families, friends, and residents of the Długołęka Commune – planting vegetation on the prepared platforms and launching the islands together – demonstrated that with the Water Institute, we can achieve a lot: learn, act, and enjoy working together for lakes, ponds, and rivers – for the environment.
